We are excited to announce that during Q3FY19 the Barcelona office base building was awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council® (USGBC®) with the LEED O+M Gold Certification and became the second Cimpress location to occupy a LEED certified green building after our Waltham offices.
What’s LEED O+M
It is possible that you might have heard of LEED or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, the most widely used green building rating system in the world. LEED provides a framework to create healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings.
Projects pursuing LEED certification earn points across several categories: Location & Transportation, Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, Innovation among others. Based on the number of points achieved, a project then earns one of four LEED rating levels: Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum.
Ok, but what is LEED O+M?
LEED O+M or LEED for Building Operations and Maintenance offers existing buildings an opportunity to pay close attention to building operation. This can be almost any type of buildings such as office buildings, schools, retail, hospitality, data centers and warehouses & distribution centers.
That means that Vistaprint BCN is living in a building that is more efficient, healthier and greener than before. The building achieved the maximum rating in the Alternative Commuting Transportation category by reducing by an 88.06% the conventional commuting trips using an informal commute reduction tracking program. It also succeeded enormously in the Renewable Energy category where the highest rating was also achieved by transitioning to a 100% renewable energy of the building usage.
A long way here
It is more than two years since the building owner took a step forward to upgrade its business park towards sustainability and well-being, a total gross floor area of 21,645 square meters and more than 1,500 occupants. Many surveys were conducted to assess the starting point in diverse areas such as employee mobility, energy consumption, waste management…
Just to mention a few of the actions undertaken for this project: A building exterior and hardscape management plan was implemented, the potable water usage was reduced to 44.31% and water meters that measure the total potable water use for the entire building were installed. Emissions were reduced by installing energy efficient fixtures. A solid waste management policy was implemented. Smoking is prohibited in the entire project building and designated smoking areas are located at least 25 feet from all entries, outdoor air intakes, and operable windows.
Vistaprint on its side, was happy to collaborate from the beginning of this project and provided the Landlord with as much information as possible. Although most of the actions affected the common areas of the building we now have low water flow faucets in all our kitchenettes and in The Cloud that help us reduce our internal water consumption.
How does it impact the life at Vistaprint’s office?
Outside the LEED certification’s scope, Vistaprint’s Barcelona office is transitioning into a more environmentally conscious mindset in its day to day operations. Since 2016, the totality of the office energy consumption comes from renewable energy producers. New bike racks where installed in every floor of the office last year. And there is more to come like removing all individual bins, using rechargeable batteries and installing bins for batteries in all copy rooms or adding glass bins in all the kitchens, reducing soft drinks cans, reshuffling green spaces to create more awareness on the vegetation presence across the office and increasing kitchen ware to slowly remove single use items.
As Vistaprint is reinforcing its foundations we are sure these are steady steps towards how we see our offices will look like in the future. Smart buildings with a positive impact on the health and well-being of people and the planet.
This project would not have been possible without the expertise, motivation and participation of all the local teams involved leaded by the building owner.
