I had been back and forth between Germany and Finland for years when early 2013 I decided it’s time to return to Berlin and settle in. I started working at Vistaprint in Customer CARE for the Finnish Vistaprint team and with this begun a journey I could have never imagined back then.
Working as a Customer CARE Specialist on the phone was a new experience for me but I took instant liking of it. I really enjoyed talking to people and found satisfaction in being able to help them and make them happy.
A few months in, I applied for the Team Coach position and got the chance to lead our Finno-Danish team. It was fun to follow and support the team members’ growth and rewarding to see people acquire new skills and new roles. In addition, I had the chance to develop my skills and to learn a lot about myself.
When there was an opening for a position as a Manager, CARE Operations, I felt this would be an opportunity to have a bigger impact on the way we work, to help more people grow through my team and to find new situations that would push me to develop further. I have had plenty of chances to try, fail and learn, and heaps of moments of success to celebrate.
Now, the manager role has evolved into that of an Engagement Leader, and the organization continues to evolve, too. This keeps opening new doors for me to explore how to develop myself and how to use my skills to help others. Lately working with topics close to my heart, such as self-awareness and compassion, has brought me many chances to stretch my limits. Most of all, it keeps bringing me so much joy knowing that I’m working on something that matters.
If you ask me for a career advice, I can’t give you any shortcuts or instant solutions. I do believe, however, that working on the three points below will take you a long way!
Finding a purpose in what you do – for me this has always been helping others, no matter what the role is!
Knowing yourself – this combined with curiosity ensures you’ll keep finding ways to develop yourself!
Doing what is right – in any role trust is key and therefore accountability needs to show in any action you take!
